LOS ANGELES, California (May 23, 2012) - The Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) today commended the Republican Party of Orange County for removing Villa Park City Councilwoman Deborah Pauly from her position as First Vice Chair of the OC GOP.
Pauly publicly condoned violence against the Muslim community at an anti-Muslim hate rally in Yorba Linda last year. The rally was held in response to an ICNA Relief benefit dinner that was raising funds for food pantries, women’s’ shelters and disaster relief services in the US.
At Monday’s meeting, Committee Chair Scott Baugh moved to remove Pauly from her position, citing numerous offenses made by Pauly while in office. The motion passed 47 to 16.
“Sanity and civility prevailed over hate, bigotry and instigation today. We applaud the Orange County Republican Party for voting to relinquish Deborah Pauly of her title as First Vice Chair,” said Salman Syed, President, ICNA Southern California. “ICNA has previously called for the removal of Pauly from her position because of her incitement of violence against Muslims. This move by the OC GOP has shown the public that Pauly’s peers do not support her hate politics. It is a clear message to all elected officials to remember their principal duty in maintaining peace and harmony amongst their constituents. It also clearly shows that there is no place for bigotry and intolerance in our communities or from our elected officials.” ICNA has since then launched several initiatives including a free mobile clinic and has plans to start a homeless shelter.
The Islamic Circle of North America is a leading American Muslim organization dedicated to the betterment of society through the promotion of Islamic values. Since 1968, ICNA has worked to build relations between communities by devoting itself to education, outreach, social services and relief efforts.
